Detour to Romance

Harry came in a little over three years ago and waited at the head of the stairs for his girl from the 9∶05 train.

He was all dressed up and they would be married twenty minutes after she arrived.

All the passengers had left and she didn’t show up.

She didn’t come on the 9∶18 either, nor on the 9∶40, and when the passengers from the 10∶02 had all arrived and left, Harry was looking pretty desperate. I asked him what she looked like.

"She’s small and dark," he said, " and her eyebrows come to a little point in the middle. "

He showed me the telegram he’d received: ARRIVE THURSDAY. MEET ME STATION. LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE. MAY.

"Well," I finally said, "why don’t you phone to your home? She’s probably called there if she got in ahead of you."

He gave me a sick look. "I’ve only been in town two days. She hasn’t any address for me." He touched the telegram.

Harry met every train for the next three or four days.

One day, after about two weeks, Harry was behind the counter of Tony’s magazine and he began to work as a clerk for Tony.

I noticed that Harry always saw every person who came up the stairs.

One year passed, and another, then came yesterday. I heard a cry. The cry was from Harry and he was grabbed a girl. She was small and dark and her eyebrows came to a little point in the middle.

For a while they just hung there laughing and crying and saying. he tell her the many things he had done to find her. What apparently had happended three years before was that May had come by bus, not by train, and in her telegram she meant "bus station," not "railroad station." She had waited at the bus station for days and had spent all her money trying to find Harry. Finally she got a job typing.

"What?" said Harry. "Have you been working in town? All the time?"

She nodded.

"Well, Heavens. Didn’t you ever come down here to the station?" He pointed across to his magazine stand. "I’ve been there all the time. I’ve watched everybody that came up the stairs."

She began to look a little pale. Pretty soon she looked over at the stairs and said in a weak voice, "I never came up the stairs before.,I went out of town yesterday on a short business trip. Oh, Harry!" Then she threw her arms around his neck and really began to cry.

After a minute she backed away and pointed toward the north end of the station. "Harry, for two years, for two solid years, I’ve been right over there working right in this very station, typing, in the office of the stationmaster."

What Courage Looks Like?

I know what courage looks like. I saw it on a flight I took six years ago.

Minutes after we were airborne, our plane began dipping wildly and one wing lunged downward. The pilot soon made a grave announcement.

“We are having some difficulties,”he said.“we are not sure our landing gear will lock, so the flight attendants will prepare you for a bumpy landing.

In other words, we were about to crash.

As I looked at the faces of my fellow travelers, I was stunned by the changes I saw in their faces. Everyone lost composure in one way or another.

I began searching the crowd for one person who felt peace and calm that true courage or great faith gives people in these events. I saw no one. Then a couple of rows to my left, I heard a still calm voice, a woman's voice, speaking in an absolutely normal conversational tone. There was no tremor or tension. I had to find the source of this voice.

All around, people cried. Finally I saw her.

In the midst of all the chaos, a mother was talking to her child. The woman, in her mid-30's and unremarkable looking in any other way, was staring full into the face of her daughter, who looked to be four years old. The child listened closely, sensing the importance of her mother's words. The mother's gaze held the child so fixed and intent that she seemed untouched by the sounds of grief and fear around her.

A picture flashed into my mind of another little girl who had recently survived a terrible plane crash. Speculation had it that she had lived because her mother had strapped her own body over the little girl's in order to protect her.

I strained to hear what this mother was telling her child. Over and over again, the mother said, “I love you so much. Do you know for sure that I love you more than anything?”

“Yes, Mommy,” the little girl said.

“And remember, no matter what happens, that I love you always.

Then the mother put her body over her daughter's, strapped the seat belt over both of them and prepared to crash. For no earthly reason, our landing gear held and our touchdown was not the tragedy it seemed destined to be.

The voice I heard that day never wavered, never acknowledged doubt, and maintained an evenness that seemed emotionally and physically impossible. Only the greatest courage, undergirded by even greater love, could have borne that mother up and lifted her above the chaos around her. That mom showed me what a real hero looks like. And for those few minutes, I heard the voice of courage.
